So who is Rene Turrek & what is Art Basel?

Rene Turrek – graffiti artist

René Turrek, born 1977 in Osnabrück and raised in Bad Iburg, already engaged in school days with art and graffiti. At the age of 16 years Turrek began with the illegal spraying, not without legal consequences. Today he works with the BKA to dissuade young people from illegal spraying. The graffiti culture did not let go. When he got the first official artistic orders, he realised quickly that he could make his hobby his profession. In the beginning “door to door” was on the agenda, but the young artist didn’t depend on it to realise his dreams. After the first steps in the United States, which today generates an image of the world famous “Ocean Drive” in Miami (limo graffiti), he returned to Germany in October 1998. In America Turrek did not only gain experience, but also met new ways to present his emerging art. Back in Germany, he wanted to convince his fellows to believe that graffiti is more than just wall graffiti. Turrek sought to present ways to put his art on canvas on display. “Unfortunately, I laid in the beginning with a lot of stones in the way. It was hard to find opportunities to exhibit. “The Bad Iburg Dörenbergklinik finally offered him space to present his graffiti art to the public. The exhibition was a great success, because after a short time the enthusiasm of numerous visitors, earned him more opportunities to show his art. This was followed by, among other exhibitions in Trier, Amsterdam, Brighton, London, Copenhagen, Lyon, Hamburg, Berlin and Ischgl. Due to its strong social tendency Rene Turrek started early to support non-profit foundations and associations by auctioning some of his exhibitions. After his motto: “Art can move mountains”, it came to him about collecting money for children in need. For this he also worked with various celebrities. 2006 organized René Turrek in Osnabrück an exhibition at which 50% of the proceeds went to the free bed fund. This successful project encouraged him to continue to demonstrate social commitment and to provide the Ronald McDonald Foundation some of his latest works available for sale. To date, he regularly supports various social projects.
